Maya Plissetskaya is the most exciting personality to have emerged from the ballet world since the legendary Anna Pavlova With her astonishing energy and the total rejection of conventional ballet techniques, she has become a legend in her own right. In 1943 she joined the Bolshoi Ballet as a Soloist and her revolutionary approach became known throughout the world through her interpretations of Raymonda and Odette/Odile in Swan Lake. Many of the world's greatest choreographers have created roles for her, including Roland Petit in La Rose Malade and Maurice Béjart with Isadora.

Maya Plissetskaya was director of the Theatro Lirico National de España. In 1991, King Juan Carlos of Spain awarded her the Gold Medal of Fine Arts.
